Kingfisher Class visit Roman Villa to connect learning in school to real life experiences.

Kingfisher Class had a fantastic experience at The Newt in Somerset exploring the Roman Villa. They loved their tour of the museum, where they learned about the villa’s location, excavations, human remains, and mosaics. Then they planned a Roman dinner party, deciding who to invite, how to lay the table, which ingredients to buy at the market, and designing pottery inspired by myths and legends. They used their practical skills, carrying out mini excavations in sand, repaired discovered treasures, played a traditional Roman game called Rota, created their own mosaics, and handled real Roman artefacts. After this busy morning, they concluded their visit with a guided tour of the villa.

The Kingfishers were an absolute joy—asking thoughtful questions and making great links between their learning in school and what they saw.

Community Bingo raised over £1100 for amazing future opportunities.

The Friends of St Aldhelm's School Easter Bingo on Friday night was a real success raising over £1100 towards fun opportunities for our children. It was a real community event with current and former pupils and families as well as village residents. Enormous thanks to the volunteers who made this event a real success, including our fabulous Bingo Caller and to those who donated eggs. 💚🐣Advocacy🙏💛

Science Skills Showcased with Parents and Carers

Child-led Science: a chance to explore curiosity.

Falcon Class (Y5/6) and Nightingale Class (Y1) joined together for Science Week and found enormous positives in doing so. The purpose of their work this year for British Science Week, has been for it to be completely child led. This has meant that they have had such a range of interesting questions and theories generated. There were enormous benefits of working together and fact, many older children realised that the curiosity of younger children can take you on a more creative investigation. 💚Belief🍃Aspiration🔬Advocacy💛

Totally Fab Rugby

Some of our Year 5 and 6 children represented St Aldhelm’s in the Clive Lewis Tag Rugby Festival at Frome Rugby Football Club. They aren’t a team that train or play regularly together and for some it was their first ever rugby match but their confidence grew over the afternoon. They played some amazing rugby to come second in their pool, winning the semi final and were runners-up in their final. Totally fab! 💚Belief🏉Aspiration😀Advocacy💛

Diocesan Prayer Box inspires new ways to pray

The Diocesan prayer boxes recently spent a week at St Aldhelm's school in Shepton Mallet and Revd Gill Sakakini led worship with the children who took turns to delve into the box and draw out an object out before discussing what it might mean to them. Teachers observed that while doing this the children were moved to express thanks to God. Revd Gill recommends the prayer boxes and said, ‘The Prayer Box activities brought fresh and fun ways to think about prayer, embracing both quiet personal talking with God and interactive ways of praying in groups in embodied ways. The blow up globe was particularly inspiring and memorable!’

Today is Safer Internet Day and in a special assembly this morning we explored this year’s theme ‘Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’. It was amazing to see our children’s knowledge and use of AI, even for our very youngest children. Classes deepened their understanding of AI with some classes exploring how to stay safe with smart speakers like Alexa or looking at situations in which AI is okay or not okay to use. 💚Belief💻Aspiration📱Advocacy💛

Year of Reading Challenge set with Whitstone Secondary School

We welcomed Mrs Heaton from Whitstone who launched the National School’s Reading Challenge. This year is the National Year of reading! Children in Year 2-Year 6 will bring home a bookmark to keep track of the books they read between now and the Summer holidays. Once they have read a book, they can write the name inside one of the books on their bookmark. There are awards for reading milestones: the first being 7 books. Once children have read 7 books, bring their bookmark to Mrs Phillips. Bonus books can be awarded for visiting Shepton Library for a stamp as well as sharing with their class who their reading companion is.

We were delighted to welcome the very special poet and children’s author A.F. Harrold to St Aldhelm’s on Thursday. He’d already sent us a postcard with a poem before his arrival. He delighted our classes with his word play (there were giggles and guffaws aplenty) and Kingfisher Class created a fantastic poem with him titled “The Dangerous School” proving that everyone can be a poet and poems really don’t need to rhyme. We are all really looking forward to your next postcard! We are so thankful to our The Friends of St Aldhelm's School. When the children arrived in school for the last day, Father Christmas had left some early Christmas presents for each class, which everyone enjoyed playing with. Then later in the afternoon, during Christmas parties, a mystery magical tinsel covered sleigh delivered individual presents for each child. Forest School Club is a time for creativity, child-led play and freedom. The galleon was transformed into a kitchen and dining room, children taught others how to swing as Spider-Man, dens were built, bows and arrows and leaf wreaths were created all with opportunities to chat and collaborate with children from different classes. 💚🍃Belief🏹💛

Speak Out Stay Safe

The whole school has been learning about the NSPCC important message ‘Speak Out and Stay Safe’. Following assemblies to discuss different ways to stay safe, the rights of all children to be safe, which adults we might talk to if we are worried and learning the NSPCC phone number to call if we are worried, children then reflected together in class. There has been an amazing variety of responses from new displays in classrooms to act as a reminder, to longer pieces of writing sharing the important messages and colourful posters too. 💚Belief📞Aspiration🗣️Advocacy💛

'Best ever' performance inspires amazing puppet making.

We always love the performances from Make the Sunshine CiC and this one from Stories in the Dust was amazing! In fact, Mr Powell voted it as the best he had seen in his teaching career! Our children were entertained by the songs and stories and came away with some very thoughtful questions that showed a real depth of understanding and a willingness to find out more.

Owl Class then followed this up with a Home Learning Project to draw or write about the end of the show, write a review or create a puppet out of recycled materials. We think they are fabulous! 💚Belief🎭Aspiration🌍Advocacy💛

Victorious Waste Free Lunch

Kingfisher Class had a fantastic day Carymoor Environmental Trust.

They absolutely loved the site tour, looking at the waste tunnel, capped landfill, weighbridge and waste transfer station. They also had great fun making kites out of recycled materials.

They were determined to top the waste free lunch leaderboard and they did! 💪

They have returned to St Aldhelm’s inspired by the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle message and a determination to make changes to positively impact on our wonderful world 💚Belief♻️Aspiration🌍Advocacy💛

A time to reflect on Generosity

Kingfisher Class visited St Aldhelm’s Church for our spirituality day that focussed on generosity, this half term’s Christian Value.

They listened to the story of Nehemiah using Lego to retell the story, thought about brokenness in our world, spoke about God’s generosity, mindfully ate rock cakes and created artwork that focussed on ‘building together’ using some unusual paint. We are so thankful to the team who generously give their time and care to make these events special for our children. 💚Belief🧱Aspiration⏰Advocacy💛
