Year Six - Summer Term 2008

So far this term,,,

We have been busy counting down the days to our KS2 Sats! We have been working really hard on English, Maths and Science skills, revising some key concepts and learning how to work more efficiently within a given time frame.

Some of this timed work, especially in English, has been stunning.
For shorter writing tasks, children are allowed five minutes 'thinking time' followed by fifteen minutes to write. Click here to read some fantastic examples of unaided, timed writing. These pieces have been chosen because the writer has taken risks, drawing on personal experience and using adventurous language to engage the reader.

We have also been learning in a practical way. In the photos below, you can see us examining rocks and soils for their properties.

Having worked on-and-off on our clay models during the spring term, we are finally getting busy creating stop-animation films based on our story boards. Here are some still shots of us at work:

As a quick, much-welcomed break from revision, Mrs Kaunhoven decided we should practise our measuring, conversion and ratio-calculating skills via a practical cooking session. We worked in groups to:

  • read and select cake and cookie recipes
  • convert imperial measures to metric
  • measure out the ingredients
  • mix the ingredients in the right order (a challenge for some of us!)
  • wash up
  • sample our product

We had a great afternoon and were proud of what came out of the oven.
Most of our produce was sold at the Y2 & Y6 Friday market; we are going to use our half of the £150 profit to buy some treats when we are in London on our residential trip in June.
