Year Five Summer Term 2008 - Class Teacher Mr J Anderton

During the spring term Ancient Greece was the focus for Year Five. Through this topic we produced a wide variety of work including our own Greek reference book, covering many aspects of the Greek civilisation. We also wrote some Greek myths, creating heroes and monsters of our own. You may have also seen, in class or on the star work display, the Greek pots we made. They were designed and built mimicking Greek designs and styles.

In the summer term the focus is "contrast", with an investigation into the differences between the local area of today, and that of the Victorian age. In addition to our History work, we are comparing our local area with Bristol, looking for geographical features and benefits of living in different areas.

In DT this term we are designing and building moving toys, using cams and mechanisms, with the aim of producing a toy that a younger sibling, or school pupil, would enjoy playing with. For inspiration and design ideas we will research Victorian toys.

Science this term involves exploring the many rich habitats within the school grounds and researching those further a field. We are hoping to gain a greater understanding of adaptation and interdependence. Using keys we will try to identify the wildlife around the school. Once we have a good understanding of identification keys we will create our own.

During English this term we have started a unit based on a short animation entitled 'The Monk and the Fish' (Le Moine et le Poisson written by Michaël Dudok De Wit). We are writing a narrative to go with this short film but hope to produce a final project using ICT. During our exploration of the film we have analysed its features; discussed the many filming techniques; and undertaken role play to develop our understanding of the story and characters.
