Year Five Spring Term 2007 - Class Teacher Mr J Anderton

First of all, I would like to say thank you to all of Year 5 for their Christmas presents. I didn't eat all the chocolates myself, or PE would have been a lot slower this term.

Last term we finished our Theseus and the Minotaur tapestry, and have it up on display in our classroom.

This made a good start on our topic for this term, as we are now focusing on the Ancient Greeks. Through History we are researching and exploring the ancient Greek civilisation, trying to understand the Greek way of life. With our knowledge of Greek government and democracy growing, we will make links to our own society. The local democracy is the focus for Citizenship this term, and through learning about the roots of democracy, in Ancient Greece, we will develop our understanding of modern day systems.

We will continue the theme in English this term, during our myths and legends unit. The Ancient Greek myths provide an exciting and imaginative base from which Year 5 will produce their own myths and legends. Also in English this term, we will work with traditional stories and tales, linking in with the Jamaican story telling day. As part of our current English focus to develop writing skills, all the children have individual targets.

In PE we are playing hockey outside and practising our ball control and game skills. While inside we are dancing and moving to music.

This term Science is all about changing state and understanding the transition between solids, liquids and gases. As the term progresses the focus will be gases around us. One of our scientific investigations this term is looking at factors affecting the rate of evaporation.
