Year Five Autumn 2006 - Class Teacher Mr J Anderton

In Year 5 it was a fresh start for the children and a new teacher in the school. Together they built the class rules and routines, and settled well into their new responsibilities.

During our first term the main focus was Geography and the local environment. With a new Tesco development underway in Shepton, which will have a big impact on our local area, we decided to get involved. After work in class we wanted to find out how the rest of Shepton felt, so we compiled a survey and walked down into town to ask shop owners, market traders and anyone passing what they thought. When we got back, we collated the information and made graphs in maths, in order to draw conclusions about local opinion. The trip was a huge success.

In Science we learnt about micro-organisms and left bags of various materials, including food, all around the classroom. After two weeks studying the effects of micro-organisms, it was clear that they had been busy! We also learnt about microbes and hygiene, useful for when we make bread in term 2.

We also started a textiles topic in Art and began making a tapestry telling the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. After some practice in techniques to attach textiles and developing plans for each scene, we began to create our class tapestry that will be finished in term 2.

Now it's term 2 and the build up to Christmas has started. In English we are writing instructions for making Christmas decorations, to be sent to France and used by the children there to make their school and homes more festive. The Year 5 brass band are learning carols during practice, so some homes may get a tuneful awakening this Christmas. This is the third year of playing brass for the children.

Year 5 recently performed their own play, 'Ivan and the fool', to much acclaim.

Rev. Martin visited our class to answer our questions about how a Christian should behave. Here are some of the things we remembered from what he said:

  • A Christian should forgive anyone who hurts them, even though it is hard. Jerome

  • Rev Martin said you are what you cannot forgive. Eve

  • Nobody knows anything about Jesus until the last three years of his life. We don't know what he was like as a child but we can imagine how he might have behaved. Tavish

  • He grew up in a Christian family and although there was a time when he tried not to believe he has always been a Christian. Joe

  • If someone asks him what he thinks of God he will tell them but he doesn't interfere if people don't want to believe in God. Ellie

  • Rev. Martin wouldn't give money to someone on the streets but he might take them to buy food or a drink. Imogen

  • God will forgive as he showed in stories in the bible such as the unforgiving servant. Holly

  • Jesus forgave a criminal who was on the cross next to him. Molly
