Year Four Summer 2008 - Class Teacher Mrs J Stallard

Design Technology

Last term we all designed and made a container to hold something special.

Hazel: It was tricky to sew it because I kept sewing it to my trousers. It's for my DS and I have pockets for my games.
Freya: The sewing was tricky because the thread kept coming out and I didn't know where to go next. I can use it for my DS or my phone or anything else.
Jake: I kept going wrong when I was sewing and had to go back over what I'd done. The button is very rare and is very popular.
Michael: The hardest thing was making the knots big enough so that the thread wouldn't come out of the needle. It has lots of pockets, 2 quite big ones. The biggest pocket is for my DS.
Cameron: The hardest bit was sewing all the knots around the sides. The needles kept falling out when I was trying to thread them.
Brandon: The PVA glue didn't work very well. I made a dinosaur to go on the front and I am going to use it for my cards.
Ellie: I liked the sewing bit because I love sewing and it was very fun when we had to stick the decorations on. Sometimes when I was trying to sew the thread kept coming off.
Poppy: I thought the design was beautiful but it was hard to do the sewing.
Conner: I found the sewing hard.
William: I found the sewing very easy. It's for my Dad's mobile phone.
Jack: I am making it for my Mum because it's her birthday soon!
Lewis: I found the sewing very easy. I made it for myself to put my PS2 games in.

Katie:

The sewing was easy because I practice at home. I'm giving it to my Mum to use as a phone holder.
Emily:

I am using it as a Nintendo case. The PVA glue wasn't very sticky because one of my sequins came off.

Euan: My case I have been sewing is for my Nintendo DS. At the front I have put some decorations, an L and an M for Mario and Luigi.
Owain: My pocket is big. It was hard work to make because my sewing kept coming out.
Hannah: The hard bit was sewing on my button but it was worth it because I think it looks nice.
Tom: I thought it was really hard doing it because my stitches kept going into a big knot. My second best phone in the world is going to be kept in there or my pocket PC.
Lewis R: It was easy to make and I'm going to give it to my Mum for her birthday.
Katelyn: It's to hold a phone. It was easy putting on the sequins and it was quite hard when you had to sew little stitches.
Josh: When I stuck the sequins on they didn't stay on very well and only three was left. The sewing the 2 bits together was hard. Choosing the colours was hard.
Zara: It was hard sewing the button on. I'm going to use mine for money and my Nintendo games.
Lucy: I'm going to use my pocket for my phone and it was hard to sew it together.

Here is some information about what we are learning in Class Four this Term, including some useful websites.

Homework

This will be the same as last term. All children have a spelling list (see Key Information) for this term, which they need to learn at home for our Friday spelling test. Maths is usually set on Friday and will be marked in class on Tuesday. There will also be a reading homework, to be completed by Tuesday, which should be written in reading journals.

In Geography we will be learning about water around the world. This links well with our science topic which is about how to separate solids and liquids.

In Maths will be learning more about fractions and decimals, solving word problems and working out which calculation to do. We will also be developing the use of standard written methods for calculations. Please carry on practising times tables at home, it is also important that children can use their tables for division.

In English we will be learning more about poetry and how to write explanation text and recount. In sentence writing we will learn how to make sentences interesting by varying the way they begin. We will continue to work hard on learning different spellings and different ways to learn them.

After half term we will be learning about keeping healthy in Science and PSHE. We have already begun to learn about how to say no to drugs, including smoking and alcohol and will begin a short series of lessons on Sex Education. Parents will be invited to a meeting at school to find out more about what we teach.
