Local Environment
Throughout the past 2 terms, Year 3 have been learning about sustainability and our local environment. We have been out and about using maps to explore how the land is used near our school. Our walks included a visit to see what goes on in Doulting Stone Quarry.

Doulting Quarry - Cutting rock from the ground.

Carymoor Environmental Centre

We visited Carymoor Environmental Centre to find out what happens to all the rubbish that we don't recycle. Here are some photos of our trip.

Many lorries full of rubbish arrive every day.
They are weighed as they arrive.

Our rubbish is put in a huge area which is growing day-by-day. The soil is clay which seals the rubbish and stops the surrounding area from becoming toxic. As the rubbish rots a liquid called leachate is produced. It is highly toxic and is drained away and treated using bacteria to make it safe to put back into the river.
At Carymoor there is a round house. We found out how people lived in the iron age. They used everything and created very little waste.
In the afternoon we made electricity using wind and solar power.
