Year One, Summer Term 2008 - Class Teachers Mrs Reed and Mrs Cox

Year 1 - Mrs Reed & Mrs Cox.

In the Spring Term year 1 were busy constructing their own fairytale houses as part of their DT topic. We decided it would be a good idea to link this topic with both our Literacy, in which we were exploring traditional and fairy tales, and our History topic. The children's task was to design a house for a fairy tale character, making sure they thought about who it is for, what they would need to make it, and what might it might be like.
Thank-you to all the parents who provided the many cardboard boxes for the task and of course our parent helpers for their 'hands on' help. Here are just a few pictures of the children being very industrious.

We have also been busy changing making the role play area an interesting feature of the classroom, making sure it ties in with some of the topics taught during the term.

This linked with our Literacy unit on poetry when we were writing our own rhyming couplets based on 'The pirate ship Song.

The children love the role play area so much we have decided as a class to spend the money we raised at the cake sale on dressing up clothes just for Year 1. Obviously if you have any lurking in your cupboards that are no longer used we are sure they can be put to good use.

Science in year1

Last term in Science the topic "Pushes and Pulls" was enjoyed by all the children. The children observed and described the effect of pushes and pulls using examples of familiar things. This term the topic is "Sorting and using materials".

It is mainly concerned with classifying and sorting materials.

Children will be encouraged to distinguish between "objects" and "materials" They will be made aware that some objects are made from natural materials and some are made from man-made materials.
Last term in History the topic "What were homes like a long time ago" generated a great deal of interest amongst the children. The topic looked at similarities' and differences between homes today and homes in the past. They were able to observe pictures of a Victorian House and objects used in various rooms compared to what we use in our homes today. This term in Geography we are looking at the local area and making decisions about improving the quality of the immediate environment.
