On Monday
22nd January, Mrs Robson ran a wire sculpture workshop with Year Six.
Using the theme of Jamaican Flora and Fauna, Year Six had drawn a 2D design
on paper, which they then converted to a 3 dimensional wire sculpture.
Below you can read Year Six's comments about the day.
We learnt:
- different
techniques for connecting the wires (Rebecca)
- how to
use pliers to bend and cut (Peter)
- how to
use pliers properly and to handle wire safely ( Emily and Felicity)
- about
a new type of animal - a snake-necked turtle (Matthew)
- how to
handle wire and also the names of the tool (Katy and Alice)
- how to
make a piece of art out of wire (Ollie)
- that some
wires are easier to bend than others (Ashleigh)
- how to
make the outline of the shape (Ashley)
- how to
make a 3D wire 'cage' (Luke, Olivia, Charlotte)
- how to
make a bird out of wire and how to use the caging technique for the
bird's chest (James)
We found
these aspects tricky:
- I found
it hard to link the two start wires together (William, James, and many
others)
- I found
it difficult to make the outline with the thick wire (Robert)
- Bending
the wire and making little squares was tricky ( Katie)
- I got
stuck when using the cage method for my turtle's shell (Peter)
We really
enjoyed:
- Using
the wire to make different patterns ( Jake, Luke, Alice, Ollie, CJ,
et al)
- Finding
out about different animals from Jamaica ( Ashleigh)
- Making
the features of the body e.g the eyes ( Katie, Amy)
- Trying
to do something new and having a challenge (Rebecca)
- Working
with different materials (Peter)
- Using
the pliers and wearing the safety goggles (James)
You can see
photos of us at work and of our finished sculptures on this page. The
real sculptures, which we think are fantastic, are on display near the
school library.
