Year Five Cycle Safety Training
As
part of our campaign to encourage more walking and cycling to school
we offered cycle safety training to our Year Five pupils in September
and October 2006. 25 out of 31 pupils took up the offer and completed
a 12- hour course, staying after school twice a week.
The
course, run by Mr Hamilton with help from Mr Whitewick and Mrs Kaunhoven,
was monitored by the Road Safety Unit of the County Council. All the
early lessons were held on the playground and school car park before
moving onto the roads around the school where left and right turns
can be practised.
This
work supports the school's travel plan objectives (See Documents
section for details). We aim to provide cycle training annually
to pupils in Year Five to promote safe cycling.
"I
think it is good to be trained because you can have an accident on
the road but if you are trained at least you know what to do to be
safe and what to signal to the cars." - Ché
"I think cycling keeps you in good shape. It is good exercise."
- Mason
Wellie
Walk to School
On 22nd November we held our first Wellie Walk to school. 137 children
and 33 adults walked across the fields from Shepton Mallet or along
the roads from Chelynch. Some pupils walked to school because they
always do, but for others it was a change to their normal practice.
The walk
was organised by members of the HOW committee. Several posters appeared
around school encouraging children to take part and banners showing
the benefits of exercise were carried from Shepton to school.
Each
June the school takes part in the Somerset county- wide walk to school
initiative but this is the first time we have held a wellie walk.
The walk from Shepton took longer than anticipated because we had
to wait before crossing each stile and there were loads of them! The
children who walked from Chelynch avoided the mud but had to contend
with cars passing and no pavement for most of the way.
The HOW
committee will be writing letters to the local council to see what
more can be done to make walking to school safer.
