Fairtrade
Bananas
We looked
at how bananas were originally from Indonesia, but over a very long
time they spread to India, Africa and The Caribbean and South America.
We shared
out the photos showing all the stages in getting a banana to the shops.
We wrote questions about the pictures and picked out things we could
recognise. Then we had to get ourselves into the right order showing
the banana travelling from the tree to the shop.
We looked at the 'banana journey' and discussed all the jobs along the
way. Then we split into 4 groups.
One group represented the farmers. One group represented the government
organisation that helps the farmers with transport and advice. The third
group were the people who keep the bananas until they are ripe and then
organise transport to get them to the shops. The last group were the
shopkeepers.
Each group had to decide how much of the 20p that each banana cost should
go to their group.

Each
group then fedback about their thoughts and decisions.

Next we
found out how much of the 20p really goes to each group for normal bananas
and compared the figures with fairtrade bananas. The farmers got more
and the retailers got less with Fairtrade.
