Year Six Trip to Caerleon - Roman festivals and gods

The Saturnalia Festival

The Saturnalia festival was a Roman celebration where people had fun, so join in and see what they ate, celebrated and most importantly worshipped.

The Romans used to have pheasant brains soaked in blood, various meats like beef and pork, and chicken.

They also placed greenery around the food because it stood for a new beginning. Before they ate all this, they served red wine and raisins.

Romans celebrated Saturnalia like we celebrate Christmas, except the poor people gave candles and wealthier people gave apples covered in gold.

The Romans celebrated Saturnalia to praise the god Saturn because he was king of all gods.

Romans prayed to their gods by putting their hands into the water that they thought was mystic and would let them communicate with their gods.

Some Roman gods included: Taranis, Jupiter, Mithras and many more. They had many festivals, like Saturnalia.
