Year Six Trip to Caerleon - Life in Barracks

The amphitheatre was a place where the soldiers would train to fight. They would train for hours and would sometimes have a crowd to entertain. Sometimes some of the legionary soldiers practised the tortoise formation and other legionnaries in their century would pretend to be their opponents.


The Romans wore helmets made from iron and used a scutum as a shield to protect them from the enemy.

At Caerleon we saw full scale models of different soldiers within the Legion and learnt about their daily life at Fortress Isca.

The General usually travelled on horseback or by chariot, but legionary soldiers went everywhere on foot, walking about 25 miles a day.
