Year Six Trip to Caerleon - Amphitheatre

The Amphitheatre

About two thousand years ago, lived the Romans. They took over lots of different places as an army; an army of roman soldiers is called a legionary. The legionary trained in an amphitheatre that had eight different entrances. Every now and again they would do a demonstration in the amphitheatre.

I shall tell you a story of the Romans and their training.

It starts off with them practising,
"Adsigna, Intente, Laxate, Procedite, Dextor, Sumvertie!"The leader would call these orders. After, the soldiers would follow them. The pattern they created would be called Square bashing.

When the day of the demonstration would arrive, there was probably about two thousand people getting ready to watch them. The people would all sit on the around the field of the Amphitheatre, on the hard stone. Right at the back of the amphitheatre would be blocks of wood, that were seven metres tall.

The roman soldiers would have got very nervous, as they walked out onto the field. They were probably doing this for Saturnalia - Saturnalia was their Christmas.

The Amphitheatre

Down in the Amphitheatre,
it was raining hard.
The children from St Aldhelm's school
were getting soaked quite fast.

They were all imagining
what it was like to be
a soldier in the training ring,
fighting for you and me,

They tried doing drill
but it was appalling!
When they should go left,
some turned left and others right.

By the time they reached the coach,
everyone was soaked
and the teaher said…
she would fire them if they were a real crew!
