Our exhibition of art with the theme 'Home and Away' linked our work
on the global dimension to our work on the environment. All children
contributed to the displays, either with individual pieces or by contributing
to the larger pieces of art.
By
working on the theme, pupils learned about different cultures and thought
about similarity and diversity. Recycling and reducing waste featured
largely in the children's thinking. We hope this emphasis on environmental
issues helped our pupils understand the impact we can have on our immediate
environment and our planet.
Each
class interpreted the theme in different ways: Reception children made
their own paper and made paper banners which they decorated in ways
which catch the light. Year One children made dreamcatchers based on
ideas from the North American Indians. Year Two were inspired by insects
from
Britain
and Zambia and Year Three contributed Tibetan prayer flags and a plastic
monster. They also exhibited their mural made from recycled supermarket
carrier bags. Year Four put their papier- mache models of local landmarks
on display alongside their sketches of the school grounds. Year Five
researched animal habitats in Britain and around the world and contributed
animal masks and animal sculptures. Year Six pupils worked collaboratively
on a duvet and pillow set based on their study of refugees and placed
their recycled windmills, based on a Chinese idea for reusing plastic
bottles, in the school grounds.
The
exhibition marked the first involvement of St. Aldhelm's in the well
established Somerset Arts Weeks which celebrate the visual arts in Somerset.
