From the Headteacher:

Star Work:   Congratulations to our Star Workers this week: Andrew Dummer, Ashleigh Billing, Ollie James, Emily Vaughan-Williams, Ashley Thick, Ashleigh Horton and Jessica Walton.   Their work is on display in the central corridor, in pride of place.

Heating Failure:   My apologies for the disruption inevitably caused to your routine by the closure on Monday morning.   It was clear that, given the failure of the system and the fact that it was such a cold day, we would be unable to heat the classrooms to the minimum legal temperature.   I had no option but to close the school to pupils.   Heat was finally restored at 2.15pm.   On this occasion I believe the fault was due to a blocked filter although the larger problem of how we get the relevant company to conduct a thorough overhaul of the system remains.   I have made a strong case to the County Council for support so that rather than replacing individual parts the whole system is checked.   Several steps in this direction have been taken this week.   This issue will be discussed at the governors’ meeting on Monday and followed up at County Hall.

Spelling Meeting:   Mrs Kaunhoven presented information on our approach to spelling at a very useful parents meeting yesterday evening.   The questions from parents have helped us understand what information you would find most useful and you can expect to see advice and further ideas on www.staldhelms.co.uk soon.

Police:   Our pupils were very excited to see two police cars on site at the end of school on Wednesday.  The activity was not school related – much to the disappointment of many of our pupils.

Swiss Students:   Once again we shall be hosting students from a teacher training college in Switzerland for a two week period in June.   We need three host families to put up a student and enable them to experience life in a ‘typical’ English family.   Families are paid £160 to cover expenses.   If you would like more details or would be prepared to offer a space in your home please let us know at the school office.

Church Service:   Years One and Six are leading our service in Church on Tuesday at 9.30am.   Parents are welcome to join us.

Y6 London Residential Trip   There will be a meeting on Thursday 19th April at 3.45pm (first week back after Easter).   At this meeting I will provide fuller details of the confirmed itinerary, distribute pupil medical forms and kit list, and answer any questions parents may have.

The final cost of the trip is £160 (as anticipated).   Final payment is due by 25th May 2007 and payments can also be made by instalments.   Cheques to be made payable to Somerset County Council.

From the Friends of St. Aldhelm’s (PTA):   As detailed on last week’s newsletter, the Easter Bingo will take place tonight at 7.00pm.   Also don’t forget next Thursday 29th March will be the Easter Card Competition for the children, to be produced on A5.   We do hope the children had fun completing the Mothering Sunday task form.   If you have not already done so, would you kindly send back the forms to the class as soon as possible.  Thank you.

Thank you to everyone who contributed towards the market last Friday from Class One.   You raised £63.70 for the school, despite it being very windy.

Doulting Social Committee:   On April 1st 2pm – 4pm we are holding Eggy Sunday.   Fun and games for children with an eggy theme.   Entrance is £1.50 per child, this includes all activities.   Bring along your Easter Bonnet for the best decorated hat competition.   Refreshments available.
