NEWSLETTER 10   06/07    24.11.06

From the Headteacher:

Katie Anderton:   was a finalist in David Heath MP’s Christmas card competition this year.   Mrs Matthews and I were invited to a presentation last Saturday where Katie received her prize and certificate.   Well done Katie!

Wellie Walk:   137 children took part in our walk to school exercise.   Most walked from Shepton Mallet but we also had a group walking down from Chelynch and, of course, several children always walk to school.   We were helped by over 30 parents and grandparents who also took part.   Thank you to everyone who took part.

Brass Lessons:   It was good to see so many parents at our Year 3 and Year 4 brass lessons this morning.   I hope all present got to see and hear the progress our pupils are making with their instruments.   The Year 5 lesson on Monday is ‘open’ to parents in the same way.

Lateness:   We are monitoring lateness at the moment since the number of children arriving after 9.00am is growing.   Pupils should be in school for the 8.57 start.

Website:   Go to www.staldhelms.co.uk for up to date information about each class, newsletters, and photographs of the children at work.

                                              Guacamole and sour cream dips

                                              Chilli con carne and rice

Book Fair:   Thanks to those who supported the Book Fair.   £263.59 was raised in book commission.   £150.75 worth of books for the classrooms and £112.84 worth for bookclub.

Many thanks to Eve Anderton and the Ford family for their help in running the fair.   Book Club is held every Friday afternoon in the hall annex.   Books may be paid for over a period of weeks/months by the children, using pocket money or as a treat.   Children may come during school time or after assembly as parents wish.   All proceeds go towards providing books or reading material for the classrooms.

Arts and Crafts:  On Saturday 25th November 2006 10.00am till 4.00pm there is a high quality arts and crafts Christmas Fayre in the Village Hall at school including local artists and crafts people, one of which is a parent Fiona Robson.   There will also be plants, cakes, preserves and other local produce for sale, all at affordable prices.   Refreshments will be available all day.

From the Friends of St. Aldhelm’s

The Christmas Fayre is fast approaching.    It is being held on Friday 8th December in two weeks time.  We are gathering some great hamper items which many people have contributed towards, but if not already done so we would really appreciate your donation (Infants providing food items and Juniors are providing bathroom goods).  The hampers really are a great way of providing money for your children’s school.  If you require more raffle tickets please ask at reception and a reminder that the tickets (sold or unsold) need to be returned with any money no later than Friday, 1st December.

We are still looking for helpers on the day of the fayre.  Come along and have a great time and if you do feel you could help in perhaps setting up stalls beforehand or during the fayre we would really appreciate this.  Just let the office know.

As at previous fayre’s all the children enjoy bringing in jars of sweets for the ‘sweetie tombola’.  This stall is really popular and the children love being able to contribute in something themselves.  They can decorate the jars as much as they like and do as many as they like!  If you are new to the school, there will be an example jar already made to give you an idea in the reception class window.  We look forward to seeing these and hope your children have fun doing them. There will be a prize for the class that collects the most jars.

If you have any good quality unwanted DVD’s, videos, toys and books, these items would also be gratefully received for the ‘book and toy’ stall.

We have a fantastic cake stall, which is always popular, and a chance for you to win a fantastic home made Christmas Cake.  All you need to do is guess the weight of the cake and if correct you will not need to make your own or buy one!

This year we will be having a ‘teddy tombola’.  If you have any unwanted teddies or soft toys we would love these for our stall.  Just drop them into the school reception.

We are also very lucky to have Father Christmas visit us on 8th December and hope the children find this very exciting.  Once again as mentioned on previous newsletters if you have any items you can provide in making the grotto fantastic for the children we would also appreciate this.  Also if anyone would like to help in setting up the grotto, please let the office know and we can coordinate all helpers.

There will be many other stalls at the fayre like lucky dip, decorated biscuits, etc which your children will have great fun doing.  If anyone could donate writing icing, sweeties, and edible decorations for the stall this would be great.  We look forward to seeing you all there.  Bring along grandparents, etc for a fun afternoon!
