From the Headteacher:

Term One ends today and everybody deserves a rest.   I hope the half term break is a good one for you and your children.

Mrs Hill leaves us today to take up a job with longer hours elsewhere.   I am grateful to her for her work with us as a lunchtime supervisory assistant and wish her well in her new job.

As I write this I am not sure if I shall be in school the first week of Term 2 as there is a question mark over the European Conference I am supposed to be attending.   Should I be in school you will know the conference did not take place.   If I am not here you can rest assured that I am in a foreign city working hard!   Mrs Kaunhoven and Mrs Stallard will be available should I be absent.

Our second group of Year Five cyclists finished the course after school yesterday.   25 out of 31 Year Five pupils participated in the training; our best level of take up yet.

Term Two starts on Monday 6th November giving pupils a two week holiday.   The teachers will be holding two INSET days during the break.

Visit www.staldhelms.co.uk for newsletters, term dates, parent letters and examples of children’s work.

From the Friends of St. Aldhelm’s (PTA):   Fundraising for the 2006/7 academic year is off to a good start.   The quiz night which was run jointly with the village earned us £95, our disco made £156.58 profit (this is actually very good, considering we bought almost £100 worth of stock) and our market last Friday made a magnificent £66.   Well done and thank you!

Christmas Grotto:   This year our grotto is themed ‘Santa’s Ice Kingdom’.   We do try to vary the grotto each year and last year was slightly futuristic (well it was inside the caravan anyway!) and the year before that was ‘Olde Worlde’ themed.   We don’t make much profit on the grotto, but try very hard to make it as exciting as possible for the children and think we do quite well when you consider how expensive and dull some of the ‘professional’ grottos are.   We do, however, need some supplies this year and these are as follows:

  • White sheets (doesn’t matter if they are tatty, so long as they are not coloured)
  • Polystyrene balls/ ‘s’ shapes (min 1cm diameter)
  • Chipboard and/or MDF (smallest size 1cm square)
  • White cotton wool
  • Wrapping paper (to wrap the gifts)
  • Any spare decorations that are blue or white
  • Any large toys of winter origin i.e. penguins, polar nears) you will get these back!
  • People willing to be creative

Please leave your donations in the school office, clearly labelled ‘grotto’ and whether it needs to be returned to you afterwards.   Thanking you in advance for your support!
