Sports Day: We managed to finish this event on Wednesday morning with our pupils participating in teams. The final result, for those who follow these things, is: Italy, 1st (198); India, 2nd (159); Spain, 3rd (153); Switzerland, 4th (145); Russia, 5th (131) and Brazil, 6th (128).
My congratulations to everyone who took part and finished a race.
Year One Swimming: It has been a frustrating term for our Year One swimmers. We have been informed by St. Paul’s School that the heating failure in their pool will not be fixed before the summer holiday Therefore, we shall attempt to replace the lost lessons in the Autumn term when the children are in Year Two. I shall write to these parents next term.
Sex and Relationship Education: As usual at this time of year we teach our pupils in Years Four, Five and Six about sex and relationships but, before we do, we like to offer parents the opportunity to hear about our approach and ask us questions. This is an area of the curriculum from which parents are entitled to withdraw their children. To help you make up your mind we are holding our meeting after school on Tuesday 11th July in Year Five’s classroom. If you are unable to make the meeting but want to know more, then please contact me.
Year Five went on a trip to Bristol this week to support their work in class. Mrs. Stallard and Ms Davis led the trip assisted by Ms Whitehead. Thanks to them for their hard work. I understand that it was an exhausting but worthwhile day.
School Travel Plan: Thank you again to all parents who took part in our travel survey earlier this year. I heard this week that the government has awarded us a grant of £4,700 to use on initiatives which will support safer travel to school. The governing body will decide how this money will be spent over the next school year.
Parent Governor: An election is needed to find a parent governor. If you are interested in standing please
collect a form from the school office which should be returned by 3.30pm next
Friday 7th July 2006 along with the names of two parents who will
support your nomination. Mrs. Barnett,
as Clerk to the Governors, will then convene an election.
‘St. Aldhelm’s Singers’: Last week the ‘St.Aldhelm’s Singers’ went down to All Hallows Chapel for a music festival organised by the Rotary Club. They sang five songs and performed beautifully, I was very proud of them. I would like to say a big well done to the children and a thank you to the parents who supported us.

Annual School Fete – 9th July – Any donations of bottles for the tombola would be greatly appreciated.
Bag2school is back next Friday 7th July between 8.40 – 9.10am. Every child has been given a blue bag today to collect clothing, bedding, curtains, soft toys, shoes, belts and handbags. If you need more than one bag you can use dustbin bags too. All the bags are weighed and the school receives £200 per tonne. Last time we raised approximately £350! So get collecting!! Take your bags to the lorry which will be positioned near the reception class.
Ghana Fund Raising Event: On Sunday 9th July 2006 Whitstone School Ghana Exchange Group are holding a car boot sale in the grounds of their school.
Each pitch will cost £5.00 starting at 7am allowing you time to set up your stall for the gates to open at 8am to the public.
Money raised will go towards the exchange programme, and this will also go towards funding a group of Ghanaian children to travel to Shepton Mallet.
There are 12 students travelling to South Africa, several of these students were former pupils of St. Aldhelm’s.
